HLTAID013 – Provide First Aid in a Remote or Isolated Site

The Remote First Aid Training course prepares participants to provide lifesaving first aid in remote or isolated locations where medical assistance may be delayed or evacuation may be required. This course teaches practical first aid, CPR, casualty management, communication and emergency planning skills for remote environments.

In addition, the course is delivered in line with legal and workplace requirements, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies. As a result, participants develop the confidence to provide first aid until emergency services arrive or evacuation occurs.

What You Will Learn

  • Prepare for first aid emergencies based on the site
  • Assess casualties in remote environments
  • Provide safety at the scene
  • Contact emergency services and relay clear information
  • Conduct basic triage for multiple casualties
  • Provide ongoing care until help arrives
  • Coordinate evacuation in remote or isolated locations
  • Complete incident documentation and debriefing

Remote Emergency Response Skills

  • Perform CPR on adults and infants
  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Manage asthma and anaphylaxis
  • Manage choking incidents
  • Treat bleeding and shock
  • Manage fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
  • Manage snake and funnel-web spider bites
  • Manage hyperthermia
  • Manage head, neck and spinal injuries
  • Use tourniquets and haemostatic dressings for life-threatening bleeding

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered in the workplace or at an EMCARE WA training facility.

Course Duration

  • Online with face-to-face: Pre-course online learning plus a 6-hour face-to-face session
  • Face-to-face: 16-hour full face-to-face course

Work Placement Arrangements

No work placement is required as part of this course.

Entry Requirements

  • Participants must have the physical capacity to perform the practical demonstrations, including two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.
  • Participants must be able to perform rescue breathing techniques on manikins.
  • Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other device with internet access to complete online or pre-course study.

Assessment Requirements

Participants must complete both written and practical assessment tasks. Additionally, practical scenarios simulate remote emergency response situations.

Practical Scenarios and Performance Tasks

  • Perform CPR on an adult, including AED use and recovery position procedures
  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on a simulated first aid scenario
  • Perform CPR on an infant
  • Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Manage a casualty with asthma
  • Manage a choking casualty
  • Manage non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, including minor wound cleaning
  • Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
  • Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
  • Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
  • Manage a casualty with envenomation, including snake or funnel-web spider bite
  • Manage a casualty with hyperthermia
  • Complete a remote first aid scenario, including planning and preparing for a remote trip, conducting basic triage and coordinating evacuation
  • Complete a planning and equipment checklist

Theory Assessment

The theory assessment includes multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
