The Asthma and Anaphylaxis First Aid Training course provides participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence to respond to asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies in workplace and community settings. This course applies to workers, nominated workplace first aiders and members of the community who may need to provide first aid during an asthma or anaphylaxis emergency.

In addition, the course teaches participants how to develop risk management and risk minimisation strategies for people diagnosed at risk of asthma or anaphylaxis. As a result, learners can support safer workplaces through emergency planning and individual management plans.

Please note: Some industries may require additional training, including childcare workers, school teachers and related industries.

What You Learn in Asthma and Anaphylaxis First Aid Training

• Recognise asthma and anaphylaxis signs and symptoms
• Provide first aid treatment for asthma emergencies
• Provide first aid treatment for anaphylaxis emergencies
• Administer asthma medication using appropriate techniques
• Administer an adrenaline auto-injector for anaphylaxis
• Follow emergency action plans and first aid protocols
• Develop asthma and anaphylaxis management plans

Risk Management and Emergency Planning

This course also covers pre-emergency risk assessment and management. Furthermore, participants learn how to develop and implement individual asthma and anaphylaxis management plans.

Course Delivery

This course may be delivered online with face-to-face assessment. Additionally, the online pre-course learning and theory assessment are expected to take approximately 3 hours to complete.

These timeframes are estimates. Participants with prior experience may complete the online component faster, while those new to the subject may need more time.

Online Learning Requirements

Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments and access course materials.

Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to complete online learning. Support is available where required.

The online learning program is available through the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic device with internet access to complete online study and assessment tasks.

Entry Requirements

Participants must meet the following entry requirements:

• Provide an official form of photo identification, such as a driver’s licence, passport or student ID
• Have literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Australian Core Skills Framework Level 3
• Be physically fit enough to complete practical demonstration skills
• Have the required language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills for training and assessment

Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Skills

• Learning: Follow step-by-step instructions and ask for help when more information is required.
• Reading: Read and understand simple health instructions, signs and emergency plans.
• Writing: Complete basic forms and record key details about an incident or situation.
• Oral communication: Listen carefully and speak clearly when giving or receiving important information.
• Numeracy: Use simple numbers to check times, doses or read labels in an emergency setting.
• Digital literacy: Use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources.

Course Duration

• Refresher minimum duration: 180 minutes
• Blended minimum duration: N/A
• Face-to-face minimum duration: 270 minutes
• Online with face-to-face minimum duration: 45 minutes

Assessment Requirements

Individuals undertaking this course must complete both written and practical assessment tasks. Additionally, students must complete all documentation and case study requirements to the required standard.

Practical Demonstrations

• Infant – administer asthma medication using a mask and spacer
• Child – administer asthma medication with a spacer using a Personal Asthma Action Plan
• Adult – administer asthma medication without a spacer using the Asthma First Aid Protocol developed by NACA
• Administer an adrenaline auto-injector for anaphylaxis
• Provide first aid for an allergic reaction

Case Studies

• Case Study 1: Risk Assessment and Emergency Management Strategy for an individual with asthma-like signs and symptoms and no previous diagnosis
• Case Study 2: Risk Assessment and Emergency Management Strategy for an individual diagnosed with asthma and anaphylaxis

Documentation

• Complete a First Aid / Incident Report Form
• Complete a Risk Assessment
• Complete an Individual Management Plan, including a Communication Plan

Theory Assessment

The theory assessment is a written exam consisting of multiple-choice questions.

Certificate Renewal Requirements

The units have the following recommended renewal periods:

• 22578VIC – Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis: 36 months
• 22702VIC – Course in the Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies: 36 months
