The Warden and Chief Warden Training course combines PUAFER005 and PUAFER006 to develop both operational and leadership skills for workplace emergency response. This course prepares participants to operate as part of an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO), lead emergency response procedures and support safe evacuations.
In addition, the course combines online pre-course learning with a practical face-to-face assessment session. As a result, participants gain both theoretical knowledge and practical emergency response experience.

What Is Warden and Chief Warden Training?
Commonly referred to as the Warden and Chief Warden course, these units apply to individuals who may need to make decisions about occupant safety during an emergency. Specifically, participants may need to give instructions on the priority order for responding to an emergency incident.
This includes command, control and coordination of facility emergency response procedures, as well as concluding the facility emergency incident.
In addition, participants may need to act as the primary liaison with emergency services. People who undertake this role are generally members of an Emergency Control Organisation, including Chief Wardens, Deputy Chief Wardens and Communications Officers.
Industry Standards and Workplace Application
This Warden and Chief Warden Training course has been developed to cover a broad range of emergencies and facilities as considered in Australian Standard AS 3745 and Australian Standard AS 4083.
As a result, it applies to employees across all industries and workplace contexts.

- Apply Work Health and Safety (WHS) / Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements

Entry Requirements
Participants must have the physical capacity to complete all practical demonstrations.
This includes wearing suitable identification, assisting occupants, using communication systems, and commanding, controlling and coordinating facility emergency response procedures.
Pre-course and Online Study Requirements
Pre-course study: Students may be required to complete online pre-course work before attending the face-to-face session, depending on the course delivery mode.
Online study: Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic device with internet access to complete online or pre-course study.

Assessment Requirements
Assessments are conducted during the face-to-face training session and include practical tasks, documentation and theory assessment.
Performance Tasks
- Undertake pre-emergency planning
- Prepare and plan for an emergency
- Operate as part of an ECO in a fire emergency
- Lead an ECO in a fire emergency
Documentation
The student must complete the following documentation to the appropriate standard:
- Emergency equipment fault log
- Emergency evacuation incident and debrief form
- Facility emergency plan extract
Theory Assessment
The theory assessment includes multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Students must complete all assessment questions.
Units Delivered
Training and assessment are delivered on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909.
The following units will be included on your certificate:
- PUAFER005 – Operate as part of an emergency control organisation
- PUAFER006 – Lead an emergency control organisation
Certification
Certificates are usually issued on the same day. However, they may also be issued the following day or on a Monday if training is completed on a Friday afternoon.
Course Duration
Course durations can vary for multiple reasons. Therefore, the durations below are the minimum possible amounts.
- Refresher minimum duration: N/A
- Blended minimum duration: N/A
- Face-to-face minimum duration: 360 minutes
- Online with face-to-face minimum duration: 45 minutes
- Online with face-to-face assessment: Face-to-face contact time of 60 minutes. This is the option offered on this page.
