The Drug and Alcohol Testing Course provides the skills and knowledge required to collect urine, oral fluid and breath specimens for drugs of abuse testing. This course is suitable for people working in collection centres, hospitals, healthcare environments and workplaces where drug and alcohol testing takes place.
In addition, participants learn how to confirm collection requirements, prepare the individual and equipment, collect specimens correctly and follow chain of custody procedures. As a result, learners develop the confidence to complete testing procedures in line with workplace requirements, legislation, standards and industry codes of practice.

Entry Requirements
An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

- Language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills required for training and assessment

To successfully complete this course, students need to demonstrate the following LLND skills during training and assessment:
- Learning: Follow detailed procedures, maintain accuracy when completing tasks in the correct order and apply feedback to improve performance.
- Reading: Read and interpret technical procedures, individual information, infection control requirements and chain of custody documentation.
- Writing: Accurately complete familiar and unfamiliar workplace forms and records using clear and appropriate terminology.
- Oral communication: Communicate clearly with individuals and colleagues, ask relevant questions and use appropriate workplace terminology.
- Numeracy: Accurately measure specimen volumes, check dates and reference information and record numerical details independently.
- Digital literacy: Use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources.

Assessment Requirements
Individuals undertaking this course must complete both written and practical assessment tasks. Additionally, students must complete all required documentation to the appropriate standard.
Performance Tasks
- Collect a urine sample for drugs of abuse testing, including a non-compliant client scenario
- Collect an oral fluid sample for drugs of abuse testing, including a tampered sample problem-solving scenario
- Collect a breath sample for drugs of abuse testing
Documentation
Students must complete chain of custody forms for:
- Urine sample collection
- Oral fluid sample collection
- Breath analysis sample collection
Theory Assessment
The theory assessment includes short-answer and multiple-choice questions.
What Happens at the Course?
During the course, participants complete practical specimen collection scenarios, chain of custody documentation and theory assessment. This ensures students can demonstrate both practical skills and required knowledge.
