HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid
The Advanced First Aid Training course prepares participants to coordinate and manage first aid responses in complex workplace and community emergencies. This course includes practical simulated real-life situations involving multiple casualty incidents, casualty movement, serious illness, and potentially fatal injuries.
In addition, participants learn how to provide advanced first aid in line with legal, community and workplace considerations, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies. As a result, learners develop the confidence to provide care until emergency services arrive.
What You Will Learn
- Coordinate and manage an emergency response
- Provide advanced first aid
- Perform CPR on adults and infants
- Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Manage asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies
- Manage choking incidents
- Respond to bleeding, shock, fractures, sprains and dislocations
- Manage snake and funnel-web spider bites
- Respond to hypothermia and hyperthermia
- Manage head, neck and spinal injuries
- Use tourniquets and haemostatic dressings for life-threatening bleeding
- Complete workplace incident documentation
- Participate in post-incident debriefing
Advanced Emergency Response Skills
This course builds on basic first aid and CPR skills. Furthermore, it develops advanced response skills for high-risk workplace and community emergencies.

- Recognise psychological impacts after emergencies
- Seek support when required

Course Delivery
This course can be delivered in the workplace or at an Emcare WA Pty Ltd training facility.
Course Duration
- Online with face-to-face: Pre-course online learning plus a 6-hour practical assessment session
- Face-to-face: 16 hours minimum
Work Placement Arrangements
No work placement is required as part of this course.

Entry Requirements
- Participants must have the physical capacity to perform two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.
- Students completing online study must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other device with internet access.

Assessment Requirements
Participants must complete both written and practical assessment tasks. Additionally, practical scenarios are conducted during the face-to-face training session.
Performance Tasks
- Perform CPR on an adult, including AED use and recovery position procedures
- Complete a first aid incident report form based on the adult CPR simulated first aid scenario
- Perform CPR on an infant
- Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
- Manage a casualty with asthma
- Manage a choking casualty
- Manage non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, including minor wound cleaning
- Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
- Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
- Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
- Manage a casualty with envenomation, including snake or funnel-web spider bite
- Manage a casualty with a life-threatening bleed
- Complete a first aid incident report form based on the life-threatening bleed first aid scenario
- Coordinate a multiple casualty incident
Theory Assessment
The theory assessment includes multiple-choice questions. Students must complete all assessment questions.
