The Chief Warden Training course prepares participants to lead an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) during workplace emergencies. This course helps participants make decisions about occupant safety, give clear instructions and coordinate emergency response procedures.

In addition, the course combines easy online pre-course learning with a 30-minute face-to-face practical session. As a result, participants gain both essential knowledge and practical emergency leadership experience.

What Is PUAFER006 Chief Warden Training?

The PUAFER006 Chief Warden course applies to individuals who may need to make decisions about occupant safety during an emergency. Specifically, participants learn how to give instructions on the priority order for responding to an emergency incident.

This includes command, control and coordination of facility emergency response procedures, as well as concluding the facility emergency incident.

In addition, participants may need to act as the primary liaison with emergency services. This role generally applies to members of an Emergency Control Organisation, including Chief Wardens, Deputy Chief Wardens and Communications Officers.

Industry Standards and Workplace Application

This Chief Warden Training course has been developed to cover a broad range of emergencies and facilities as considered in Australian Standard AS 3745 and Australian Standard AS 4083.

As a result, it applies to employees across all industries and workplace contexts.

What You Will Learn

Participants in this Chief Warden Training course will learn how to:

  • Apply Work Health and Safety (WHS) / Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements
  • Brief emergency services personnel
  • Command, control and coordinate facility emergency response procedures
  • Comply with legislation, industry standards, codes of practice and regulations
  • Give clear directions and keep others informed throughout the emergency in accordance with the facility emergency plan
  • Identify evacuation assembly areas
  • Implement facility emergency response procedures
  • Interpret information displayed on emergency control indicator equipment, including fire indicator panels, building management systems and security management systems
  • Prepare for emergencies in a facility
  • Respond to emergency signals and warnings appropriately
  • Undertake pre-emergency planning

Entry Requirements

Participants must have the physical capacity to complete practical demonstrations for the course.

This includes the ability to:

  • Command, control and conduct regular training exercises
  • Conduct dynamic risk assessments
  • Control access to affected areas and monitor evacuation processes
  • Assess emergencies and initiate action plans and procedures
  • Provide debriefing information
  • Compile reports for the emergency planning committee and management

Certificate Renewal Requirements

This certificate does not require renewal.

Assessment Requirements

This course includes practical, written and documentation-based assessment. Additionally, participants must complete all assessment requirements to the appropriate standard.

Performance Tasks

  • Prepare for emergency situations
  • Lead as a Chief Warden in a fire emergency

Documentation

The student must complete the following documentation:

  • Emergency evacuation incident and debrief form

Theory Assessment

The theory assessment includes multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Students must complete all assessment questions.

Certification

Certificates are usually issued on the same day. However, they may also be issued the following day or on a Monday if training is completed on a Friday afternoon.

Course Duration

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons. Therefore, the durations below are the minimum possible amounts.

  • Refresher minimum duration: N/A
  • Blended minimum duration: N/A
  • Face-to-face minimum duration: 180 minutes
  • Online with face-to-face minimum duration: 30 minutes
