HLTWHS005 & HLTAID011 Course Set for Healthcare Workers

The First Aid and Manual Handling Training course combines HLTWHS005 – Conduct Manual Tasks Safely and HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid into one nationally recognised program. Furthermore, it develops the practical skills needed to perform manual handling tasks safely while responding confidently to workplace emergencies. As a result, participants gain valuable skills that improve both workplace safety and emergency preparedness.

In addition, this course gives participants the skills to recognise hazardous manual tasks, apply safe handling techniques, perform CPR and provide first aid until emergency services arrive.

What You Will Learn

  • Recognise and manage hazardous manual tasks
  • Apply safe manual handling techniques
  • Understand body mechanics to reduce injury risk

First Aid Emergency Response Skills

Furthermore, you will complete realistic first aid scenarios. Consequently, you will feel more confident applying your skills in real workplace situations.

  • Perform CPR on an adult using an AED
  • Perform CPR on an infant
  • Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Manage a casualty with asthma
  • Manage a choking casualty
  • Manage bleeding, shock, nosebleeds, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
  • Manage envenomation, including snake or funnel-web spider bites

Safe Manual Handling Training Skills

As a result, you reduce workplace injury risk and improve safety outcomes. Likewise, you learn techniques that protect both workers and the people in their care.

  • Assess hazardous manual tasks
  • Apply safe lifting and moving techniques
  • Perform horizontal manual handling tasks
  • Perform high-to-low manual handling tasks
  • Perform low-to-high manual handling tasks
  • Complete a workplace risk assessment

This course aligns with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards, industry codes of practice and Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

Therefore, the course aligns with national workplace requirements. Additionally, it reflects current Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and workplace health and safety legislation.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered in the workplace or at an Emcare WA Pty Ltd training facility.

Course Duration

  • Online with face-to-face: Short pre-course online learning plus a 90-minute practical assessment session
  • Face-to-face: 690 minutes minimum

Work Placement Arrangements

No work placement is required as part of this course.

Entry Requirements

Participants must have the physical capacity to perform two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor. In addition, learners must complete physical manual handling tasks safely. Before attending, they should ensure they can participate in every practical activity.

Assessment Requirements

Participants must complete both written and practical assessment tasks. Additionally, assessment activities are conducted during the face-to-face training session.

Performance Tasks and Practical Scenarios

During the practical assessment, participants will demonstrate how to:

  • Perform CPR on an adult, including AED use and recovery position procedures
  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on a simulated first aid scenario
  • Perform CPR on an infant
  • Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Manage a casualty with asthma
  • Manage a choking casualty
  • Manage non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, including minor wound cleaning
  • Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
  • Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
  • Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
  • Manage a casualty with envenomation, including snake or funnel-web spider bite
  • Manual Handling Task: Horizontal movement based on the student’s workplace environment or job role
  • Manual Handling Task: High-to-low movement based on the student’s workplace environment or job role
  • Manual Handling Task: Low-to-high movement based on the student’s workplace environment or job role

Theory Assessment

The theory assessment includes multiple-choice and short-answer questions.

Certificate Renewal Requirements

  • HLTWHS005 – Conduct manual tasks safely: Not applicable
  • HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation: 12 months
  • HLTAID010 – Provide basic emergency life support: 36 months
  • HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid: 36 months
