HLTSS00068 Occupational First Aid Skill Set

The Occupational First Aid Training course is suitable for people employed in, or intending to become employed in, nominated occupational first aider roles. This course prepares participants to provide advanced first aid, oxygen therapy, advanced resuscitation, workplace first aid management and ongoing casualty care.

In addition, this course is delivered in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, relevant state and territory Work Health and Safety requirements, safe work practices and first aid codes of practice. As a result, participants gain practical skills for high-risk workplace emergency situations.

What You Will Learn

Workplace First Aid Management

Participants learn how to develop and maintain first aid action plans in consultation with relevant parties. Furthermore, they learn how to complete workplace risk assessments and maintain first aid equipment, including resuscitation equipment, oxygen equipment and workplace first aid kits.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered in the workplace or at an Emcare WA Pty Ltd training facility.

Course Duration

  • Online with face-to-face: Pre-course online learning plus an 8-hour practical assessment session
  • Face-to-face: 24 hours minimum

Assessment Requirements

Participants must complete written and practical assessment tasks. Additionally, practical scenarios simulate real workplace emergencies and first aid management situations.

Performance Tasks and Practical Scenarios

  • Perform CPR on an adult, including single and two-rescuer CPR
  • Use a bag-valve-mask
  • Select and insert an appropriate airway adjunct
  • Manage oxygen equipment
  • Use an AED to deliver at least one shock
  • Place a casualty into the recovery position
  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on a simulated first aid scenario
  • Perform CPR on an infant
  • Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Manage a casualty with asthma
  • Manage a choking casualty
  • Manage non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, including minor wound cleaning
  • Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
  • Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
  • Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
  • Manage a casualty with envenomation, including snake or funnel-web spider bite
  • Coordinate a multiple casualty incident
  • Manage a casualty with a life-threatening bleed and provide oxygen
  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on the life-threatening bleed scenario
  • Maintain resuscitation equipment
  • Conduct a workplace risk assessment
  • Develop a first aid response plan, including strategies for incident management
  • Use a first aid checklist to service a workplace first aid kit for supplies replacement and equipment maintenance

Theory Assessment

The theory assessment includes multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
